The hardware perimeter

The US Federal Communications Commission announced the import ban this week, calling the affected devices an "unacceptable" national security threat. The bulk of the supply chain runs through China, which dominates global market share in every category on the list. Roughly 15,000 humanoid robots shipped worldwide in 2025; China's two largest manufacturers accounted for the majority of those units.

The stated fear is straightforward: foreign-made hardware can be remotely controlled, weaponized for surveillance, or pivoted into an attack vector during a future crisis. Beijing responded through a Foreign Ministry spokesperson quoted by the Associated Press, pledging "all measures necessary" to protect Chinese businesses. A planned state visit between Xi Jinping and Donald Trump in September now sits on top of an escalating hardware standoff.

What the ban actually changes

Humanoid robots and robot dogs remain early-stage — far from mainstream deployment, still mostly demos and pilot programs. Power inverters are a different story. They sit inside US households and commercial installations, connecting solar arrays and renewable systems to the wider grid. The FCC carve-out is narrow: existing installed devices are unaffected. Only new imports hit the wall. Exceptions exist, but only if the government determines a specific device does not pose a risk.

The move slots into a familiar pattern. TikTok was forced into US hands. Foreign-made consumer routers drew warnings. Hikvision and Dahua were blacklisted over human rights abuses. Each step chipped away at the assumption that hardware from adversarial jurisdictions is benign by default. The pattern is now undeniable.

What enterprise IT should actually do

Procurement risk just got heavier. Any roadmap relying on Chinese robotics or inverter suppliers now faces a hard wall on new units, while installed bases keep running until they don't. The attack surface isn't shrinking; it's being formally catalogued. Senator Cantwell, per Punchbowl News, is pushing national security agencies to apply the same scrutiny to AI systems — the regulatory perimeter keeps expanding.

Expect procurement questionnaires to grow new fields: origin of robotic components, firmware provenance, remote-access kill switches, third-party telemetry endpoints. The same logic that banned an inverter can ban a sensor stack, a networking appliance, or a professional cinema body like the RED V-RAPTOR — every cross-border shipment of sensitive hardware now carries policy weight.
